Nothing else most of us own at home comes close to those numbers, and that is precisely why these two stations generate more pre-race anxiety than the other six combined.
The distance is the second problem. Per the official Hyrox rulebook, both stations cover 50 m, broken into four 12.5 m lengths. On the push, you drive the sled down the lane, turn, and restart it from dead. On the pull, you stay inside a marked zone and haul the sled toward you with a rope, length by length, until it has covered all four. Those restarts matter: the first three steps of every length are the hardest, and you face them four times per station.
The surface is the third — and the sneakiest. The push rewards a low, rigid forward lean and short, choppy driving steps: quads, glutes, and calves working hard and repeatedly while the torso stays braced against the handles. The best home substitutes recreate that shape under honest resistance.

Loop a strong resistance band around your waist, anchor it low behind you to a post, rack, or a partner, then lean into the exact push angle — arms out as if on sled poles or hands driving into thin air — and march forward with short, powerful steps until the band stops you, holding the drive for time. 2. Loaded carpet or turf pushes. This is general physics working in your favor: a rougher surface under more load means more friction, which is a crude cousin of exactly what makes the race carpet cruel. Set your hands low, lock your arms straight, and drive from the legs rather than shoving with the shoulders. It is unglamorous and endlessly adjustable — add load or a rougher surface whenever it gets easy.
3. The car push. The heaviest option in the home arsenal. The pull is a different animal. The weight stays low, the hips hinge, and the arms haul hand over hand while your feet fight for purchase — and for many athletes it is grip and upper back that fade first, not legs. A good Hyrox sled pull alternative therefore has to load the hinge and tax the hands, not just add resistance.
1. Hand-over-hand tarp or tire drags. The closest shape match. Load an old tire or a heavy-duty tarp with plates, sandbags, or paving slabs, tie on 10 to 15 m of rope, brace in a low hinge, and haul it toward you hand over hand. Walk the rope back out and repeat. Use a thick rope, or double a towel around a thinner one, so your grip works as hard as it will on race day.

3. Heavy band rows and band hand-over-hand pulls. Anchor a strong band at floor height, hinge, and row with intent — or tie a length of rope to the band and practice fast hand-over-hand cycles against the stretch. This is the small-space option: no surface, no drag path, just a door anchor and a band.
4. Grip finishers. Towel-grip rows, dead hangs from a bar if you have one, and heavy holds at the end of a session all target the same fade point. The pull rarely breaks athletes at the hips; it breaks them at the hands, so train the hands on purpose.
Programming Hyrox training without a sled
Substitutes only pay off if they show up in the plan the way the sleds show up in the race: heavy, repeated, and surrounded by running. A sensible home week gives the sled problem two appearances.
- One dedicated heavy session. Alternate push and pull substitutes in 50 m doses — for example, a band march or loaded push in four 12.5 m efforts with a two-second reset between lengths, then a hand-over-hand drag in the same format. The four-lengths structure is free specificity: it rehearses the restarts that per the official rulebook you will face on race day.
- One brick session. Run 1 km at your target race effort, go straight into 40 to 60 m of drags or band marches, and repeat for three to five rounds. Working the sled positions on legs that have just run is the sport's core skill, and it is entirely trainable in a park.
On load, we stay deliberately non-prescriptive: aim for a resistance that slows you to a powerful walk, not a jog. If your substitute lets you run freely, it is conditioning, not sled prep.
